The UMD can only look in one direction. This must be either the negative or positive direction, letting the position of the UMD be the reference point. The default setting is to say the UMD looks in the positive direction. It can be adjusted to call the direction it looks the negative direction. This is OK since our choice of the positive and negative directions are purely arbitrary.
