A steep graph indicates a large speed, a graph with a more gentle slope indicates a small speed. Why? The speed is a measure of the distance traveled per time. If the object is moving fast, it will travel a large distance in a given time. Thus the graph must "rise" by a correspondingly large amount during a given "run" of time since the height of the graph indicates the distance from the UMD.
