West face of the Arch of BeneventumWhen the Via Appia was extended beyond Capua, the first section was to Beneventum, about 35 miles from Capua.  Here one finds an impressive triumphal arch erected across the Via Appia between 114 and 166 AD in honor of Trajan.  The bas-reliefs tell the story of Trajan's achievements.   This image is what the traveller from Rome would see as he approached the arch on the Via Appia. This side of the arch, facing Rome, considered the northwest face, glorifies what Trajan had accomplished for Rome.  On the opposite side of the arch Trajan and the empire are celebrated.  When one crossed under the arch, one proceeded southeast towards Brundisium and from there to the eastern empire.
