BACK TO DIRECTORY

Adjectives belong to either:
I. The 1st and 2nd declension- e.b. magnus, -a, -um, / pulcher, pulchra, pulchrum
II. The 3rd declension- e.g. celer, celeris, celere, / levis, levis, leve./ ferox, ferox, ferox
(n.b. ferox is the same in the masc., fem. and neuter so one learns the genitive form to find the root...ferocis)

Adjectives agree with nouns: CASE / NUMBER / GENDER

Adjectives NEVER leave their own declension unless to change the degree (see comparative adjectives)

E.G.

magna navis fortus servus grave periculum ALL NOM. CASE
magnam navem fortium servorum gravia pericula
Acc. sg. gen. pl. nom./acc. pl.

N.B. Third declension Adjectives vary from third declension nouns in the following: all abl. sg. -e becomes -i, all gen. pl. -um becomes -ium, neuter nom. and acc. pl. -a becomes -ia.
