| The Imperative Mood |
To create imperative forms of deponent verbs, start with the 2nd person forms of the present tense, i.e., the "YOU" forms.
Cavete! The singular imperative may look like an active infinitive but -- of course -- it can't be because deponent verbs never appear in active form.
| Sample verb | Singular | English | Latin plural |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st - conor, conârî | conâre | Try! | conaminî |
| 2nd - fateor, fatêrî | fatêre | Confess!! | fateminî |
| 3rd - egredior, egredî | egredere | Leave! | egrediminî |
| 3rd - loquor, loquî | loquere | Speak! | loquiminî |
| 4th - ordior, ordîrî | ordîre | Begin! | ordîminî |
Negative Imperative Verb Forms ("Don't do that!"): Use the imperative form of nolo, nolle, nolui, 'not want', followed by the present infinitive of the desired verb.
| Singular | English | Plural |
|---|---|---|
| noli conârî | Don't try! | nolîte conârî |
| noli loquî | Don't speak! | nolîte loquî |
