    When we were together
    I was the happiest.

    When we were together,
    I outshined everyone.

    Now I'd die for Chloe,
    everything about her is perfect.

Well, I'd die twice for Calais,
    he is more than perfect.

Lydia, how weird would it be
    if we got back together?

    Horace, that's incredibly dumb
    but why not?

When I was in your arms,
not in those of some other
I could feel myself luckier than the king of England.

When you burned for me as for no other,
and I wasn't your second choice to her,
I felt like the most loved woman in the world.

Now I'm taken, by Chloe, that Malibu chick,
and I would give my life for her,
    if God would let me.

Yeah, well I'm dating Charlie, from Brentwood.
we spend every night in his room with one candle,
and I would die TWICE for him. So there.

    Just hypothetically speaking, of course,
but if we were ever in a situation where we might... happen again...?
like, say, if Chloe were to visit her grandma in Monterey?

Are you kidding? Charlie's, like, hotter than David Beckham,
and you dress like your dad.
...but if we were to... be together, like that, again? ...I would spend every second with you.

Horace: When it was I who made you happy, when it was I who held your love, when it was no one else but I who could caress you, I was happier than the happiest man alive.
Lydia: When I was the only one you loved, you did not even love Chloe more than me. Everyone was happy then and I felt like the richest princess in the world.
Horace: But now I do love Chloe. The sound of her voice and the touch of her skin are soft and sweet. If it came to it I would gladly die for her so that she might be spared.
Lydia: Well I also have a lover, named Calais, whom I love more than anyone else in the world. I'd die two times for him if I knew that his life would be spared.
Horace: Well what would you say if we just so happened to be brought back together? Am I to forget Chloe and you to forget Calais?
Lydia: Although he is far more beautiful than you, than even creation itself, strangely nothing would make me happier than to live and die with you by my side.

    While I was pleasing you
    With you beautiful arms
    Around my neck
I was happier than any king.

While you saw no one but me
And put no one before me
    I outshined everyone
    Even outshining the most popular.

    Now Chloe is my girl
More beautiful and graceful then any
For her I would give my life
So she may live another day.

    I burn nor for Calias
    Born of Ornytius,
And just as you would die for her,
I would die for him to live another day.

But what if fate saw fit to
    Bring us together again?
And what if I broke up with
Chloe to be with you again?

Though Calias is far more charming
And you are scared of love
    And have a mighty temper
I would gladly live with you till my dying day.

Back before all of this started,
when you were mine and mine alone,
    we could not be parted,
happiness set me on a throne.

No one could compare to me
When I shined full of your love
I was regal and, everyone could see,
More beautiful than the purest dove.

But now I love dear Chloe
Who stole me with her angels voice,
I would take a bullet and die slowly
To keep her alive would be my choice.

And I have been busy too
With Calais, a young and handsome boy.
I'd take two bullets for my lover who,
Is much more than just a toy.

Lydia, what if we stopped all these games
And fell back into love again?
Would you forget your lovers' names
    And could we anew begin?

Horace, as always my head knows
    To tell you "never"
But as always my heart goes
    "Always and forever".

Ode 3.9 is a dialogue between Lydia and a young man, perhaps Horace. We do not know in this poem who Lydia was.

After reading the poem carefully, write out a contemporary rendition of it...not a translation. However, you do need to cover all the points of the poem, stanza by stanza.
Your opus may be in either prose or poetry. Do NOT write a literal translation. You are encouraged to use tasteful contemporary terms.

An example: Stanza I: While you allowed me in your life, I was happier than when the coach praised me.
