Optional Activities Cetera

Important notes about optional projects:

All projects are to be graded at KET. You must provide a clear photograph of your project with a narrative description that includes the process you followed in creating your project. You may:

  • If you do an art project, you don't need to mail to project itself to KET. If your project is small, for example the Bulla Project, by all means send it, but it isn't required. You only have to send a photograph and description of your project to:  Ann Denny, KET, 600 Cooper Drive, Lexington, KY 40502
  • You may submit via email your digital images of your project and description to:  adenny@ket.org
  • Know how to do web pages? Submit via web page by creating a summary HTML page that includes the main photo, the text, and links to additional photos (if any). Then email the link to me at:  adenny@ket.org
  • If your project is a written report, then either mail a paper copy of your report to the same address or email it as an attached document (.doc and .rtf formats only. If you use Wordperfect, then be sure to save in .rtf format).

Caveant discipuli! (students beware!) If you do an optional assignment and receive near or full credit, it will increase your grade. Note that these are optional assignments, which increase your possible point total for the class. These are not extra credit which simply add points.

For example, say your possible point total for the test category is 500 points, and you have 450/500 as it stands. 450/500 is a 90% and if you did a 100 point optional assignment and received full credit, your score would be 550/600, 92.7%. However, if you don't get full credit, say half credit, then it would become 500/600, 84% and your grade would go down.

Hence, these optional assignments affect your grade like any other required assignment, quiz or test. Therefore, it would behoove you to do well and put effort into an optional project if you decide to do one! For most projects, it is easy to earn full credit if you follow the instructions. I have these projects not just to earn credit, but also to have fun as well. If you decide to create holiday cards (or whatever), be sure to use proper Latin and put effort into them. Too often I receive rather sloppy notes instead and cannot give these students full credit for their effort. This is the one area in which I usually see poor work. Other efforts are usually genuine. I think the cards, for example, appeal to those who are looking for easy points and think they can submit anything rather than those who are really trying to improve their Latin in ways that interest them.
