This cliff in Terracino was ordered cut by Trajan. The Appian Way had followed up one side of this hill and down the other - slowing Trajan's couriers. Trajan ordered his engineers to level the road - thus they sliced the 120-foot cliff. Every 10 feet there is a Roman numeral indicating the height from sea level.
