Optimates

The patrician and equestrian classes were divided into 2 groups - the Optimates and Populares. The Optimates represented the interests of the patricians, especially those dealing with legal or business matters. The Populares (most noted are the Gracchi Brothers, Maruis, Cinna and Caesar) championed the rights of the poorer citizens.
