Altar Both sets of stairs lead to the altar. When one looks up, one sees a hole in the ceiling. One wonders...had there been a small dome...or merely an oculus? It is neither. The altar seems to have had no roof and we are looking at what may have been a sky light in the roof of the glass enclosure. The altar is interesting and intricately carved but it is the exterior walls that draw the attention of the visitor, for here one sees visual proof of the attire worn by Romans, the procession of a sacrifice, lictors etc. Before we begin the walk around the structure, however, I want to share some of its history.
