An excavated road in Herculaneum
Herculaneum was buried in up to 39 meters of mud by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. The red mesh seen here is evidence that archaelogical work continues. Herculaneum we not a resort city but a harbor town, so Aediles did not provide stepping stones for the residents here. In the background is the modern city of Ercolano (Italian for Herculaneum).
