Introduction

Shopping in ancient Rome; so many shops to choose from. There were no supermarkets in Rome, but all kinds of interesting stores selling various goods and services. There were clothes cleaners, wool-sellers, jewelers, dyers, shoemakers, weavers, lace-sellers, and cabinet makers. If you were hungry, there were also plenty of butchers, grocers, and vegetable stores. You would need a coin like the one you see here to buy things though.

Trading in ancient Rome centered around port cities like that of Cosa. Shipping ports were very important places in ancient Rome. The sea was the primary means of trade and communication, so ports were obviously busy places. The Roman Port of Cosa was complete with concrete piers, a fishery, a winery, and a lighthouse. Cosa was a very busy place during its prime around 100 B.C. It was the most important port for the western Mediterranean.
