The Seating Plan
At formal banquets each couch seated three people. The couches were named summus, medius and imus (top, middle and bottom), and diners were seated according to their social status. The most honored guest sat at medius 3, and the host often sat next to him at imus 1. A very rich host might have two tables of nine people each. Less formal dinners often had fewer than nine people.
