Indeed, the altar was real and was used as a site for sacrificing animals, large and small alike.
There were drainholes for the sacrificial blood to flow out from the structure.
When one leaves the glass enclosure, there is a copy of the copper plaque on which the Res Gestae was written, a tribute to Augustus and the peace and prosperity he brought to the ancient world. Read here a copy found on a wall in Ankara...and its translation in English. |
