The Imperative of Deponent Verbs

To create imperative forms of deponent verbs, start with the 2nd person forms of the present tense, i.e., the "YOU" forms.

To command a single person, remove -is from the 2nd person singular form of the deponent verb and replace it with -e. Thus, loqueris becomes loquere. To command two or more, use the 2nd person plural form of the deponent exactly as is. Thus, loquiminî becomes loquiminî.

Cavete! The singular imperative may look like an active infinitive but -- of course -- it can't be because deponent verbs never appear in active form.

Sample verb Singular English Latin plural

2nd - fateor, fatêrî fatêre Confess!! fateminî
3rd - egredior, egredî egredere Leave! egrediminî
3rd - loquor, loquî loquere Speak! loquiminî
4th - ordior, ordîrî ordîre Begin! ordîminî
