Salve Discipulus aut Discipula,
Est novus annus scholasticus! Gaudeo te in mea classe esse! Nunc anglice-
Welcome back, all you who had our KET Latin I program and a big welcome to all our new students. You will continue to see Joan Jahnige as the video instructor for this school year. She retired, so I, Ann Denny, will now be your teacher and contact at KET.
I hope you will call or e-mail me when questions arise. Learning Latin, as in learning a modern language, is a cumulative exercise. You MUST BUILD on what you have learned continually.
If you have a weak Latin I background, this will be a difficult year for you. You CAN strengthen that background by working carefully with the review materials in the student guide. These activities will be assigned as homework for specific lessons. Go over each section carefully. When you encounter a problem, call for explanations. Select the areas in which you are weakest, for concentrated review with ungraded activities posted under "Araneum" on each lesson day.
As you read this, you may say to yourself that there is no problem, because you had great grade in Latin I. This may very well be true, but remember, time has passed. Do you really remember everything? As you complete the review activities, pay careful attention to vocabulary. Consider the principal parts.
There will be daily homework or time for class work with most lessons. Homework is essential to the study of any language. Language learning is a skill similar to learning to drive a car. Do it carefully and thoroughly. You should not need to spend more than 30 minutes on any assignment. If you find that it is taking longer than that, call me or the Latin assistants. Remember YOU NEED TO ASK FOR HELP whenever there are problems. You can dial our 800 number from almost anywhere. You can contact KET by phone, e-mail or the message center that you see on the LOG IN page. Be interactive. Tell us your problems and your successes. We need to know what is working, as well as what is not.
Ann Denny
