Dear Parents/Guardians of Latin II Distance Learning Students,

Congratulations! Your son/daughter is participating in a state of the art teaching program in which we will incorporate video, telephones and the Internet. He/she will be in a class with students from several other states. There may other Latin students in the same physical classroom or no other student at the same site. Whatever the situation is, being a student in a distance learning class requires a great deal of self-discipline and responsibility. Unlike a traditional classroom, instruction can continue should a student be absent, since he or she can borrow a copy of the video instruction to work at home. It is the responsibility of the student to remain on task.

Each student has a Student Guide with details about the class. Please ask to review it. Included in this guide is a lesson-by-lesson syllabus. There are 160 lessons required for this class. Homework is assigned with most lessons. Test and reading days to review for tests are included in the count of lesson days.

Family members can help by checking that the student has done the homework assignment and reviewing vocabulary words together. Learning Latin is a skill that needs regular reinforcement. Each student is asked to create flash cards for vocabulary. Many find memorizing a difficult task, but it is with regular review that one can memorize. Therefore, your assistance in listening to their efforts, even if you do not know Latin, is very helpful.

The KET staff is available to answer any questions either by phone or e-mail. Students who want more explanation or more practice activities can call KET for assistance. While I am not physically in the classroom for the instruction, my assistants and I are available most every day, when assistance is needed. I welcome your calls or e-mail messages, as well as those from the students.

Since Latin II is a continuation of Latin I, there are thorough grammar and vocabulary review activities included in the Student Guide. These are the first assignments. The facilitator has an answer key, with which students can check their work. If unclear as to why an answer is incorrect, the students should call or e-mail for assistance. There are also ungraded reinforcement activities posted on the web site along with vocabulary games.

Ann Denny

The first lesson for this year introduces Ann Denny, who replaced Joan Jahnige, as the KET teacher. Students will continue to see Joan as their video instructor, but when they contact KET, they will have their questions answered by me.
