Dear Facilitator,
Salve et multas gratias for serving in this challenging and interesting position as facilitator for Latin II. You are the person who maintains a learning environment in the classroom, the one who makes materials accessible to students and the one who provides the personal guidance the students need in order to make distance learning most effective. You are the most important link between this class and the students. I appreciate the hectic schedule you have and the myriad of duties you are called upon to perform in addition to facilitating this and perhaps other distance learning classes. I will endeavor to make my communications with you as succinct and clear as possible. Please call me whenever any questions arise. There is never a 'foolish' question. The question you hesitate to ask may very well be on the minds of several others who also hesitate to call. Also, I like to speak with each of you. It helps to know a little about you and for you to know me. Our rapport helps the students.
Please take the time to read through all the materials, even if you are a veteran facilitator. Please review the Student Guide with students and answer any questions which may arise on lesson one. Most Latin II students were in distance learning last year and will be familiar with the class structure. However, we continue to add to materials on the Internet. Thus I request that you review the Student Guide page by page, paying careful attention to the grading segment, the required and optional materials.
I have included much in this first packet to help you start the school year without the need to download a number of documents from the Internet. After this, most data will be sent via the Internet, including quizzes and tests. Quizzes and most homework can be taken directly on the Internet, allowing students instant satisfaction to see their success. Tests will be downloaded and mailed to KET for grading.
As I review materials, from Latin I, students will find ancillary materials on the Internet. I encourage students to do these ungraded exercises electronically so they can see their results and know where they need to study. Since these reviews are ungraded so students can retake the exercises as often as needed. I cannot stress strongly enough the need for careful work as students complete the review materials. Their comprehension of what was covered last year is vital to their success this year.
Since I will be giving a two-day comprehensive test on this data, students have an extra reason to be perspicacious with this review. Students can call me during the day with any questions they have about the review material and indeed should do so prior to taking Test 1. I value these questions since they help me know what needs iteration.
Any additional supplementary packets will be sent via the Internet after this initial mailing. Please retrieve the material and keep it in a file or notebook for easy access. Please keep the answer keys in a separate book away from student access.
Please watch the Facilitator Guide CD included in the front of this notebook. It outlines changes made for this year, including two new required projects (Derivatives Project and Roman Calendar Project), and new optional grading slots to use at your discretion. Any optional materials are all in the Internet under CETERA - Additional Activities. You may use the optional homework and quiz grade slots for any optional work your students might complete. Call for assistance if there is any part of this video that needs clarification. Also, if you are new to KET Latin, call me for an orientation at 800.333.9764.
Nota Bene: The first video lesson explains that Magistra Jahnige retired, but she will continue to be the video instructor for this school year. Magistra Ann Denny (adenny@ket.org) will be your contact teacher at KET when you or your students have questions.
Again, my gratitude to you for agreeing to facilitate the Latin II class.
Ann
