Classroom Management
Please keep in mind the following general guidelines. You
will be given more specific information throughout the school year.
- During the class, all students should be prepared to take notes,
check their assignments, and, when requested to do so, call in for a phone
lesson. Broadcast time is generally 40 minutes each day. There will most
likely be an additional 10 minutes or so during which attendance and homework
may be checked. This time should be used by the students to reinforce
their Latin skills by asking questions, working collaboratively with other
students, or connecting to the Internet for related materials. On days
when the Internet is to be accessed, additional time may be allocated.
A daily participation grade is given to each student based on the facilitator's
observation of his/her use of the class time. See the grade report forms
at the back of this manual for clarification.
- Quizzes and tests will be assigned throughout the school year.
Quizzes will be on the Internet and will be generally short and
objective. It is preferable that students take these quizzes on the Internet
since our staff has developed a method for students to learn immediately
of their success and the grades will be automatically entered in the computer
grade book. I will grade any essay questions here at KET. I will also check
short answer questions for any discrepancies, credit students when answers
are correct but worded differently than my responses, and give partial
credit will be given when appropriate. The program allows me to respond to
each student's quiz response. If the class
is too large to have all students participate in Internet quizzes, you
may download the quiz and answer key. I will explain this during the first
days of class.
Tests will be assigned over one or two class days depending on the length
of the test. There will be about 10 during the academic year. Mid-term
and Final exams are also available to meet individual school requirements.
- Encourage individual student involvement be it in optional assignments,
using Latin resources to enhance other subject areas, decorating the school,
taking the National Latin Exam, participating in contests, etc.
- Create a positive classroom atmosphere by your interest and
enthusiasm. Learn Latin along with your students. This will enable you
to offer them more guidance and assistance. If you began to do this with
the Latin I class, the transition will be easy. If you are starting fresh,
you might review the Latin I text first... or try to pick up the pieces
as we progress. Ask the students to explain the Latin I material to you-it
will be a GREAT review for them! Also, designate some space in your room
as a Latin corner, shelf, or bulletin board. Encourage students to add
to this area with newspaper articles, photos, or other realia they might
find.
- Set Your VCR to record daily in the event school cancellations
cause you to miss some or all of the broadcast. It also is useful to have
a tape available for students who have been absent. We generally advise
keeping the tapes for about one week, but use your own judgment according
to attendance records. If you plan to take the block schedule class in
Spring 2001, you will need to record from August 21.
- Substitute facilitators should have clear instructions for class
procedures. Give your coordinator/principal a copy of the procedures used
to set up this class, and make sure that the substitute has access to
the equipment (key and/or password). Designate a reliable student to help
the substitute with the equipment, but please do not give students the
facilitator password. The substitute should be advised that students must
not have facilitator passwords lest the integrity of tests and quizzes
be compromised.
