A woman named Arachne wove very well,
Athena was her teacher, but she would never tell.
Down came Athena in a black dress,
She challenged Arachne to see who wove the best.

They wove all through winter
and soon they came to spring.
Athena wove a pair of socks
Arachne wove a ring.
Arachne wove much better,
It made Athena shout.
Now Arachne is the spider
That climbs the water spout!
