Required Projects for Latin I Cetera

Roman Villa Project

This project is due on Lesson 59

In this project you will demonstrate your knowledge of an Ancient Roman villa. You may choose between either the villa rustica or the villa urbana. Furthermore, you must choose to present your knowledge either by creating a floor plan for a modern villa or by constructing an edible Roman villa model.

  1. First choose which type of villa you want to build and how you will present it:
  2. Research the type of villa you have chosen. Be sure to include what makes your villa different from other villas; what rooms and special areas your villa would definitely include; and what it would most certainly NOT include. Pay special attention to the Latin term for each type of room, as you will need to know the vocabulary to label your villa correctly.
  3. To complete your project, you will need to recreate the type of villa you chose and label all of its rooms correctly in both Latin and English. In addition, you should illustrate the purpose of each room by including specific furnishings within it (e.g., a bed in the bedroom, an oven in the kitchen, etc.). Furnishings should also be labeled in both languages. A very useful website for looking up unknown words is the free online Latin lexicon Whitaker's Words. This can be found by googling "Whitaker's Words." This website should help you find any unfamiliar vocabulary words necessary for the project.
  4. If you chose to create an edible villa, you must include a written paragraph detailing how you constructed your villa. If you chose to do a modern villa, you must include a written paragraph explaining how your villa is representative of the original Roman design, despite its modern amenities. At the top of your paper, you should include your name, school, and date. Mail this paragraph to KET along with your project. If your project is too large to mail, you must send pictures of it and your paper.

PLEASE NOTE: The written paragraph is worth 20% of you grade. Choosing not to do it will have a detrimental effect on your grade for this project.

  5. "The Roman Villa," pp. 45-48 in your textbook should help you in your research. Also, you may find our collections of Ancient Villa Vocabulary and Modern Villa Vocabulary helpful in the "Verba Utilita" section of the website.
