Q: What is the National Latin Exam?
A: The NLE is a national exam that all Latin students are eligible to take. More than 144,000 Latin students across the U.S.A., Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, Italy, Japan, Switerland Scotland, New Zealand, the Republic of South Africa, Poland and Zimbabwe took the 2004 National Latin Exam, a significant increase since its inception in 1978 when 6000 students enrolled.
Q: Why should you take the National Latin Exam?
A: It is approved by the National Association of Secondary School Principals and placed on the Advisory List of National Contests and Activities. It is also an excellent way to do a self-evaluation. Success on this exam also makes a good entry on a student's college application.
Q: How do you enter the National Latin Exam?
A: Fill out the application form (PDF file - 129 kb, opens new window) There is an entry fee that the student or the school will have to pay, so enrollment is voluntary. Please note the deadline for applying to take the exam (see application for details). Late entries are accepted up to a certain date, but will incur a late fee (see application for details). Some facilitators have obtained from their school administrators permission and the fee for their students to take the exam. Taking the test is not required nor will the grade be used to determine the class grade for any student. I do request that you fax or mail me the results from your school in order that I may recognize those students who have achieved honors.
