Stratocumulus (stratus, -i, m."blanket"; cumulus, -i, m. "mass") clouds. From Latin, stratocumulus literally means "covering mass." They usually are seen 4 miles up in the atmosphere. They are gray with dark shading, and spread in a puffy layer. They do not produce rain, but they sometimes form nimbostratus clouds.
