  Nimbostratus (nimbus, -i, m., "cloud"; "layer") clouds are our most common rain clouds. They are generally less than one mile above us, and when rain falls from them, we can see it from a distance in sheets. Taken from Latin, nimbostratus literally means "rain layer."
