Cirrus (cirrus, -i, m. "curl") clouds look a little like spider webs. They sit about 7 miles above the surface of the earth, and do not produce rain. Since they are so high in the atmosphere, they are often made of ice crystals. They are often called mare's tails, due to their appearance. It also explains the name "cirrus," which is Latin for "curl."
