Altocumulus (altus, -a.-um, "high"; cumulus, -i, m. "mass") clouds, look a little like fish scales in the sky, hence, their nickname, "mackeral sky." They are puffy and often have dark, shadowed undersides. Translated, altocumulus means "high mass." they are usually seen 4 to 5 miles high in the atmosphere.
