Comprehensive Review Activity - KEY

This activity is for Latin 1 students and covers material up to chapter 7 in Ecce Romani. This is an ungraded review activity. A link to an answer key can be found below.

I. Define the following:

Give yourself credit if your definitions cover the main points in these definitions.

1. Noun A part of speech which is used to name a person, place, thing, quality or action.
2. Verb A word used to indicate action, existence or occurrence.
3. Adjective A word used to qualify or express an attribute of another noun.

II. Parts of Speech Recognition

Circle the nouns, underline the verbs and bracket the adjectives. Draw line to to connect any adjective with the noun it modifies.

Baiae is a city south of Rome where the Cornelian family spends their summers. The Cornelian family has two children, Cornelia and Marcus. Cornelia has a friend in a neighboring farmhouse. Her name is Flavia. The girls enjoy walking in the fields or sitting under a tree, reading and writing.

III. Singular and Plural Nominative and Accusative Forms

Give the case, number and gender (nominative or accusative; singular or plural; masculine, feminine or neuter) for the following forms:

1. puerum accusative masculine singular
2. puellas accusative feminine plural
3. pater nominative masculine singular
4. epistulae nominative feminine plural
5. princeps nominative masculine singular
6. arborem accusative feminine singular
7. nuntii nominative masculine plural
8. senatores nominative OR accusative masculine plural

IV. Nouns: Nominative vs. Accusative

Nominative - Used if the noun is the subject of a sentence or as a predicate nominative with a linking verb, such as "to be"

Accusative - Used if a noun is the direct object of a transitive verb or as an object of a preposition.

Activity - Look again at the passage above. List all the nouns from the passage that are in the nominative or accusative case. (Nota bene: just list the nouns that are either the subject or direct object. Ignore nouns in prepositonal phrases for now.)

V. Gender of Nouns

Fill in the blank:

1. The gender of most first declension nouns is feminine
2. The gender of most second declension nouns is masculine

VI. Cases and Declensions

Define each term (Give yourself credit if your definitions cover the main points in these definitions):

1. Case A case is the form of noun or adjective used to show its relationship to other words in a sentence.
2. Declension Nouns or adjectives grouped together by similarity of inflection (endings).

VII. Third-person Verbs: Singular and Plural

Determine whether the verb in each of the following sentences as singular or plural. Also give the subject of the verb:

1. Sextus Corneliam vexat. S P Sextus
2. Cornelius et Aurelia in villa habitant. S P Cornelius et Aurelia
3. Cornelia est puella Romana. S P Cornelia
4. Davus est Servus Britannicus. S P Davus

7. In agris currunt S P They (implied by currunt - they run)
