Here is a quick list of the eight parts of speech for reference:

Let's take a look at the NOUN!

What is a noun???? A noun is a word that can be the name of:

  • a person - girl, teacher, friend, Minerva, Jupiter, Caesar
  • an animal - goat, Centaur, Cerberus
  • a place island, - city, country, Rome, Italy
  • a thing - map, sea, picture, island, road
  • an event - birth, marriage, graduation, death
  • an idea - peace, war, love, virtue, luxury or concept

A noun which names something that is tangible, means you can touch it.

  • car
  • dog
  • table
  • letter

A noun which names something that is abstract/intangible means you cannot touch it.

  • love
  • speed
  • fear
  • jealousy

To help you recognize nouns, read this paragraph where the nouns are in highlighted.

The Romans, at the time of the Empire, imported goods from countries around the Mediterranean Sea. Fancy inlaid furniture manufactured in Asia Minor decorated the rooms of the wealthy Romans, while Greek statues and finely painted vases decorated the garden and atrium. Spices for foods and medicines made up a great market in Rome, and marble in various colors was imported to decorate the temples. The unfavorable balance of trade was so serious a problem under the Emperor Vespasian that he set up a special investigation to find out why Rome was sending out so much money for imports.
