What is the difference between 3rd and 3rd-io verbs?

Present Tense

Third conjugation verbs will deviate from the norm. For example; the rule for formation of the present tense is:

3rd conjugation infivitive is -ere with a short -e before the -re. With the -e short, the present tense will use an -i with the personal endings until 3rd person plural -nt. There the -i will change to a -u. (Rule there is never an -i before a final -nt personal ending.) Look at the present tense of rego, regere, rexi, rectus 3rd conjugation: rego, regis, regit, regimus, regitis, regunt.

3rd -io are verbs which have -ere (infinitive ending with a short -e)thus follow most of the rules for 3rd conjugtion. Because of the -io ending on the 1st PP, 3rd -io act something like a 4th conjugation verb and will have only one change in the present tense. Look at:cupio, -ere, cupivi, cupitus conjugation: cupio, cupis, cupit, cupimus, cupitis, cupiunt. (3rd person plural has an -iunt instead of -unt. Look on page 271 in the textbook. Present Tense is the top tense across the conjugations. See how the 3rd Conjugation block has two verbs conjugated instead of one verb. There the first verb will be 3rd regular (mitto) the second verb will be 3rd -io (iacio). As you pay attention to the vowels used, you should notice the 4th conjugation column and see that iacio and audio are alike in the first three tenses but not in the infinitive or the imperative (two thin lines at the top of the Present tense block.
