Augustus
Caesar
Gaius
Octavius Caesar, the grand-nephew and adopted son
of Julius Caesar, became the first emporer of
Rome with the title of Augustus (peace-loving).
He reigned from 27 B. C. until 14 A. D., a period
marked by the flowering of Roman genius in art
and literature. The Ara Pacis was a monument
dedicated in 30 B. C. by the Senate, to
commemorate his safe return from Gaul and Spain.
It has truly been said that Augustus "found
Rome a city of brick and left it a city of
marble."Source and Photo: Metropolitan
