Assignment:
An ancient hero had certain qualities: great, even superhuman, physical strength; courage; wit; and strong will. He had to be a good leader and a father to his followers. He was ruthless towards enemies but merciful to the weak. And sometimes a hero showed great altruism in acting for the benefit of others without regard to self or self-interest. But whom do you consider to be modern heroes? As a starting point for your reflections, consider this 'quiz on life' created by Peanuts cartoonist Charles Schulz. Here is Part One:
- Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
- Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
- Name the last five winners of the Miss America contest.
- Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer prize.
- Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
- Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.
If you didn't get a high score, try Part Two instead:
- Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
- Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
- Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
- Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.
- Name half a dozen heroes whose stories have inspired you.
His point, of course, was that few will remember the newsmakers of yesterday, even those who became the very best - the stars - in their respective fields. The people who will make the greatest difference in your life probably won't have the most awards, the most credentials, or the most money, but they will have certain qualities.
So whom do you consider to be modern heroes? Explain your choices in light of, or in contrast to, the qualities of ancient heroes mentioned above.
