Terminology:

Agenda - is a list of what is covered in a given lesson.

Opera - consists of classwork or homework, depending on your schedule. Do what you can within your class period if you are working at school, and complete the remainder as homework. In the event the assignment is on-line and you do not have a computer at home, complete the work on paper and submit it to your facilitator for grading, or submit it when you return to school the next day.

Denuntiationes - are announcements about the National Latin Exam and other items of interest.

Araneum - the word means 'spider web' but no spiders live on our ever-active web site. Find links to materials about the Roman world or ancillary activities that you may enjoy.

Other areas of interest on the Latin I Home Page:

Log In: As soon as you have your ID and password, login; a screen will appear with options. Select "Send messages" and write me a note. I will respond to let you know the system is working. I prefer that you use this, instead of regular e-mail, to send me anything that does not require an attachment.

Previous Work: Once your personal school calendar has been entered into the system, use this tool to go to the lesson you want, rather than clicking one lesson at a time on the scroll bar. (Calendars are entered into the system by the facilitator. If you do not have an active facilitator, send KET your school calendar, including holidays, and the day you actually begin the class.)

Notes to Teacher: A link to the web-based message system to send questions or assignmnets to the teacher or Latin assistants.

Forum: An area in which you are invited to post your thoughts. All are optional assignments.

Gallery: Images of the ancient world are found under this link. A more complete Gallery is posted on the Latin II homepage, including pictures that are associated with the various chapters of Ecce Romani.

Info: Details about the course, including text ordering information, is found at this link.

Navigation Bar: to the left of the scroll - has the following categories:

  • Mores - customs and culture of the Romans
  • Historia - History and People pages
  • Grammatica - explanations and some drills
  • Cetera - everything that doesn't fit the other categories, including projects and details about Roman Life
  • Verba - vocabulary, derivatives, modern terminology, vocabulary games
  • Fabulae - audio links to chapter stories read in Latin (requires RealMedia Player)
  • Mythology - links to several assigned activities
  • Links - interesting sites around the world

How to Begin:

You need to have a copy of the textbook, Ecce Romani I, and an activity book, Ecce Romani IA. See "Materials for Latin I" to order the text immediately, if you have not yet done so. Call me after you have placed the order and I will send you some start up pages.

  1. Review the agenda page for the lesson you intend to begin.
  2. Complete and mail to KET the Student Photo and Information Form and the "Get to Know" Questionnaire found in this packet.
  3. Insert the appropriate videotape, DVD, or CD and follow the instruction for that lesson. Take notes. (Keep a binder for notes and computer print outs.)
  4. Maintain flashcards for vocabulary words - one card per word. You can write these when I introduce the words during the video lesson. (Use 3 x 5 index cards and a shoebox or similar container.)
  5. Complete all the reinforcement exercises.
  6. Plan ahead when working on-line or off-line; allow 45 min. for a test, 15 min. for a quiz.
  7. Read everything more than once. Constantly ask yourself what words mean. Use your flashcards. Use the interactive games on the Latin I website, or the links to games on other sites that I have referenced. Learning a new language is a skill and as with any skill requires practice.
  8. Stay on task. Do each activity in sequence. The daily work reinforces your skills. The quizzes tell you and me, that you understand the work. If you have errors in a quiz and don't understand why, ask me. The test tells me that you are ready to continue to the next segment of a class. It is important to work in the sequence that I have established.

What you can expect:

You will read a saga of the Cornelian family, a fictitious family with a name that is famous in Roman history. By following their story in Latin, you will learn about Roman life while learning to read and write Latin.

You will build your English vocabulary as you learn new Latin words.

You will learn about the gods and goddesses of Greco-Roman mythology.

You will get help from the teacher or a staff assistant when you ask.

You will have games on the computer that will reinforce your vocabulary skills and grammar knowledge.

What I expect:

You will increase your understanding of English grammar as you learn new Latin grammar. You will take notes from the video lessons and review them, while you complete all assignments with care.

You will correct your errors, contact me when you don't understand an error, and learn from the mistakes.

You will complete required assignments in the sequence in which they are assigned.

You will contact me when you have questions.

Troubleshooting:

IF you have problems:

Internet: Check to see what browser version you have. We recommend the latest version of Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox.

On-line Activities: Do NOT use the ENTER key, HOME or the BACK button. These will submit an activity, and if it is one that is graded, you will not be allowed back into the activity. Use the TAB key or MOUSE to proceed from question to question.

Use "OK" or "Let's go" to proceed from section to section.

You have 20 minutes to submit a section of an activity. If you have prepared for the activity, this is ample time. If there is power failure or some other unforeseen problem, your facilitator needs to let me know so I can offer you an alternate method to complete the activity.

Eamus...Let's Go:

When you have your password-

Go to the web site: www.dl.ket.org/latin1

Send me a message that you are in the class. Write it in Latin:
"Salve, mihi nomen est ______." (my name is___)
"Sum discipula latina." (if you are female)
"Sum discipulus latinus." (if you are male)

Check out each section of the web site.
