Student Duties and Responsibilities

1. Remember: This is interactive distance learning instruction and not entertainment video. It will be very important for you to interact with the teacher, the assistants, and other members of your class. Language is a two-way process, and you must learn to involve yourself in this process if you want to become proficient. I will provide you with many opportunities to communicate. Take advantage of these opportunities! You can "raise your hand" by sending me e-mail or participating in the Forum.
    
2. Watching and working with video instruction is but one part of the class. Homework must be completed on time and executed with care and thought.
    
3. Always check your work to be sure there are no unanswered questions.
    
4. If you miss class for any reason, you should ask the facilitator for a tape of the lesson. You should try to borrow notes from one of your fellow students. If you have Internet access at home, you can check the Agenda and Assignment on the Latin 1 front page, or refer to the syllabus in your student guide. The Homework Assignments are included in the student guide to use as reference (also available under Info on the Latin 1 front page.) You will be responsible for having completed the assignment on the day you return to class, except in very extreme circumstances that will be determined by your facilitator. Be responsible!
    
5. You must have the textbook, the language activity workbook, writing materials, looseleaf paper, and your notebook with you for all class meetings. You will also need many packs of index cards and a box for your vocabulary words.
    
6. The Latin assistant or I will be available to you through a toll-free number. The assistants are a valuable resource on Latin language and culture and will be able to give you assistance as you need it. You may also share any concerns or suggestions you have about the class.

7. Learning a second language, like learning any other skill, requires practice, which includes going over your notes, doing all the assignments, and correcting your errors. Working with the language daily will reduce the stress when it comes time for quizzes or tests. Daily practice with any foreign language will help you retain what you have mastered for a long time.
    
8. Here are two things you can do right away:
   1. Complete the Student Photo and Information/Agreement and Consent Form and the "Get To Know" Latin I Student Questionnaire. Return these forms to your facilitator. The photo should be clearly focused. It is preferable to have a simple backgroound and be wallet sized.
       
   2. Get a three-ring binder notebook. Purchase your index cards and box for vocabulary flashcards.
