Re: Options-"How To Get Help"

Thank you for allowing your son/daughter to participate in the distance learning Latin I class taught from Kentucky Educational Television. Your school is one of more than 45 schools in 12 states participating in this distance learning class. There are several ways the student can get individual help, and I want to encourage you to see that he/she takes advantage of these opportunities. Don't let the set-up of this class intimidate him/her about asking for help!

Also the material required for credit in the Latin I course is the same for a full year class and the block class. Remember, in a distance learning class, the responsibility for getting help with difficult material or keeping up when absent lies totally with the student. For more information, please read the student guide for this class, especially the grading section.

Here are some helpful suggestions for your son/daughter:

  1. If you have problems with homework assignments, tests, quizzes, or derivatives of vocabulary; have concerns about the class; or need individual interaction...
    • Call the Latin assistant or teacher for assistance during office hours: 1.800.333.9764 Mon.-Fri., 8:30-4:30 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time)
    • The facilitator may arrange a time for the class to speak by telephone with the teacher. A speakerphone is recommended.
    • Check out and watch videotape(s) made available by the facilitator of this class.

  2. Keep up with assignments when you miss class for any reason-sickness, appointments, early dismissal, school assemblies, sports events, snow days, teacher's workdays, holidays, etc. The student will be responsible for having completed the assignment on the day he or she returns to class, except in very extreme circumstances that will be determined by the facilitator.
    • See Check List: Homework Assignments! Each student should have a copy of homework assignments supplied in the student guide folder.
    • Be sure to check out and watch videotape(s) of the day(s) missed to review class material.

  3. Read aloud to family members the Latin chapter stories and English translations.

  4. Have your family members work with you on the vocabulary flashcards.

  5. Reread textbook explanations and class notes for concepts you find difficult.

  6. Work with friends on homework assignments and to review for tests. Call flashcards to each other and practice charts.

  7. If you have a few extra minutes before the beginning of the presentation/class assignment, or at the end, use the time to practice with a partner.
