A Word to the Facilitator

Welcome to interactive distance learning instruction from KET. By participating in this project, you are about to become a pioneer in education. Because we will be using the latest state-of-the-art technology, this class will probably be different from any other you have experienced. Of course, in many ways, this class will resemble ordinary classes:

Students will:
  • listen to instruction
  • take notes and exams
  • work through exercises
  • complete assignments
  • work on projects
  • ask questions
Facilitators will:
  • keep roll
  • grade some quizzes and projects
  • enter grades in the Internet grading program
  • help students with their work
  • enjoy working with students
  • keep order in the class

The differences will arise from the methods we will use to perform these tasks. I will not be physically in the classroom. To communicate with each other, we will use a telephone, the Internet, e-mail, and the FAX. Students will access the Internet to receive reinforcement instruction and interactive, self-directed practice exercises and quizzes.

*Nota Bene: Chapter quizzes are on-line, self-graded. If the student(s) cannot take these quizzes on-line, you must print copies for the students, grade the quiz, and enter the grades into the grade report. Keys are provided on-line.

These unfamiliar methods of interaction, coupled with the experience of learning a new language, present a challenge -- and make your role as classroom facilitator a pivotal one. Your students will look to you for warmth, concern, guidance and assurance.

You will serve as the catalyst of this project. An honest belief in satellite instruction, friendly and firm classroom management, and a genuine interest in the welfare of the students are the tools you will need to make this adventure a success. As a team, we can make this an exciting and successful learning experience for everyone.

This manual gives:

  • overview of class
  • procedures
  • required materials

A new facilitator will have many directions to digest. Don't panic! Read through the material now, then wait a month and skim it again, at which time it will make much more sense. You may call the KET Distance Learning staff at any time for clarification or assistance. (1.800.333.9764)

A veteran facilitator should peruse this manual to understand the changes, new check list forms, and become cognizant of the Internet component.

Personalize the classroom!

  • encourage the students to contribute items for classroom or hallway display, such as:
    • pictures of students and facilitator
    • posters or banners:
      • Latin theme (mottoes, etc.)
      • mythological theme (creatures and monster pictures)
    • plan holiday celebrations: decorating Halloween pumpkins or greeting cards
    • host a banquet
    • participate in the National Latin Exam
    • submit students for the Latin NJCL Honor Roll
