Re: Latin I guidelines and expectations

Description: Latin I from KET is a one-year or block scheduled high school course designed to introduce and develop basic communication skills in the Latin language, and at the same time, encourage an appreciation for the cultures of the ancients. The communication skills include listening, reading, and speaking. For distance learning, Ecce Romani Level I provides the core of the instruction. The subject content of the course is organized so as to teach students to read Latin by actually reading and discovering the shapes of words and the structures of phrases, clauses, and paragraphs.

A successful study of Latin will provide the student with an improvement in his/her SAT scores and English grammar and spelling skills, as well as offer a tool for learning other languages.

Why Take Latin? Most students take Latin to increase their English vocabulary, to improve their achievement scores, to gain a better understanding of English grammar, and to add a dimension to their lives and the ability to see their own language and culture through different eyes. Most parents want their son/daughter to take Latin for the self-disciplined training required for a successful study.

Course Objectives:

  1. Demonstrate comprehension of grammatical aspects of Latin and English.
  2. Develop listening and speaking skills for patterned Latin passages.
  3. Read aloud and listen to authentic Latin.
  4. Develop an appreciation of the religion of classical Greece and Rome.
  5. Develop an awareness of the culture of the ancient Romans.
  6. Demonstrate an enhancement of general language skills.
  7. Increase vocabulary through a knowledge of the origins and derivations of words.
Student Criteria: Students enrolled in Latin I from KET should have an A or B average in English. In addition, the nature of distance learning requires a special commitment on the part of the student. The student is expected to agree to:
  1. watch the class presentation attentively.
  2. participate with Internet activities and assignments.
  3. cooperate with the facilitator.
  4. complete assignments thoroughly and punctually. See the Check List: Homework Assignments, supplied in the student guide.
  5. practice the Latin vocabulary and grammar concepts daily. Listen to the Latin pronunciation of vocabulary and stories located on the Internet.
  6. contact the Latin assistant or teacher for help or personal interaction.
  7. make up missed assignments on time.
  8. meet deadlines.
  9. use their Latin skills as often as possible.
