- Impressionism is one of many ways to express reality. What type of reality does
impressionist painting capture?

Class objective: to see connections between the life and work of Van Gogh. To consider
the work of Van Gogh through the elements of design and principles of visual art.
- As you listen to the first part of this class, jot down phrases that describe
Vincent Van Gogh.
- List some phrases that describe Van Gogh's Woman of Arles.
- In what way was Van Gogh a "scientific" painter?
- Like other Impressionists, Van Gogh was inspired by Japanese art. List some
of the qualities of VG's work that link him with Japanese painters.
- Define expressionism. In what way is expressionism a type of realism?
- Edvard Munch's style was much like Van Gogh's. In what way was Munch's personal
life also full of turmoil?

Broadcast 61 - "Making it New"
Class objective: Art from 1900-Present breaks or redefines the conventions of the
past. This class considers the way The Ballet Russe, Picasso, and Rodin made new forms of art
in the early 20th Century.
- The painters of the Renaissance used linear and atmospheric perspective
to give an illusion of depth and space. The artists of the late 19th
century were interested in a "new reality." How did Monet portray
reality in a new way?
- Explain this passage: "art changes, but it doesn't get better."
- In the early 19th Century, a brilliant group of Russians changed
the face of dance. Tell the role of each of the four artists below: (Add to
