Writing Assignment
A Personal Narrative/Character Sketch

Realistic and modern writers have often drawn ideas from people or events in their own lives. Write an account of an event which was significant to you, or a character sketch of a person you know, or knew, well.

This should be a true story written from your point of view.
Suggested length after revisions: 2+ typed pages
If you need help getting an idea, try one or more of the following:

Your writing may include a wide range of ideas, from the comic to the serious. You could write about an experience on the softball field, or overcoming your fear of heights, or about something as serious as struggling with (or watching a friend struggle with) illness, anger, or prejudice. Or you could write about your grandfather and what he means to you.

First step, as always, write it all badly. The first draft should be ended but not finished. Don't worry about grammar or spend time checking the spelling. If you're searching for a perfect word, don't go to the dictionary yet. Just put a (around the section) to remind you to come back to it later.

Do worry about...

First (bad) draft due____________________

"...Both wore black, shapeless hats and both carried tight blanket rolls slung over their shoulders. The first man was small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features. Every part of him was defined: small, strong hands, slender arms, a thin and bony nose. Behind him walked his opposite, a huge man shapeless of face, with large pale eyes, and side, sloping shoulders; and he walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws."
