Red Poppy
Georgia O'Keeffe. Painted in 1927, this is one of a series of monumental flower paintings O'Keeffe made. O'Keeffe was a loner who spent most of her life in isolation in the desert Southwest. Thus, her style was very personal. Her paintings are done in a precisely realistic style. This may reflect the influence of photography, in particular the influence of her close friend, renowned photographer Alfred Stieglitz. Of her flower paintings O'Keeffe wrote in 1926, "I have painted what each flower is to me and I have painted it big enough so that others would see what I see."
