Mona Lisa
Leonardo da Vinci's 1503-6 oil painting, also known as La Gioconda,
is considered to be the first High Renaissance portrait. The woman in the painting is the
young wife of a well-known Florentine figure, though many other theories about her identity have
since surfaced, including the possibility that it was a self-portrait. Leonardo uses sfumato to
give the portrait a sense of depth and her famous sense of mystery.
