Cluny III
Cluny, France, 1095-1157. This great abbey church, an outstanding example of the Romanesque style, with heavy walls, and round arches, was the mother church of the Cluniac monastic order. The building was sold for building materials after the French Revolution, so that only the south wing of the great transept survives today of what was once the largest church in western Christendom until new St. Peter's church was built.
