I. Read Me First

Word to the Facilitator

Welcome to the interactive distance learning classroom! As a participant in this distance learning course, you will become actively involved in a multi-media approach to learning a foreign language. After checking the material in the "Read Me First " Section, please insert the section into your binder under the "Read Me First" Tab. This binder contains the pertinent information for the German 3 course.

If you are joining us for the first time, this guide will explain the important aspects of the course and the technology and methods of instruction that we use. If you have facilitated the course before, please take the time to review all the materials in the binder.

In many ways, a distance learning class is similar to a class taught live in the school. Students respond to instruction, ask questions, take notes, confer with one another, and work exercises. You, as facilitator, provide encouragement and support, hold students accountable for their work, grade notebooks and some quizzes, maintain attendance and performance records, send in tests and other assignments as requested, and keep order in the classroom. The differences in a distance learning class arise from the methods that are used to perform these tasks.

The major difference will be that I, the teacher, will not be physically present in the classroom. You will be able to see me, but I will not be able to see you or your students. To communicate with each other, we will use the telephone, U.S. Mail, e-mail, and the Internet.

These methods of interaction, coupled with the experience of learning a second language, present a challenge - and make your role as classroom facilitator a pivotal one. There is no substitute for the presence of another human being to convey warmth and concern. Therefore, in the absence of a teacher, it is natural to expect students to look to you for guidance and assurance.

The role of the facilitator in the KET German courses requires motivation and commitment. The success of each student in the class is directly affected by the competence of the facilitator.

The successful facilitator:

The facilitator serves as the students' team leader. An honest belief in distance learning, friendly but firm classroom management, and a genuine interest in the welfare of the students are the tools you will need to make this adventure a success. As a team, we can make this an exciting learning experience for all.
