Introduction
On January 1, 2002 the German-speaking countries were introduced to the new European currency -- the Euro. The new currency was the result of many years, beginning in 1951, of negotiation and cooperation among the European Community. A common currency eliminated the need for numerous import and export taxes as well as other tariffs among the European countries. A common currency also meant a stronger presence in the world economy.
