On the following pages, facilitators will find the Syllabus and Daily Planner. This is provided in order to give you an overview of the German II class for the year. Please copy these pages and post them in a conspicuous place. In this way everyone can keep track of the progress the class is making. Although great care was given to make it as complete as possible, changes may be necessary as the year progresses. These changes or more detailed explanations will be posted regularly on the German 2 web page.
Please also note that assignments have not been given in advance. This allows the course to remain flexible and accommodate special circumstances and events as they may arise. Assignments will be posted on the web a week in advance. Please remind students to check the site regularly and record their assignments on the Lesson and Assignment Sheet found in the Student Guide and in the Forms section of the binder.
Due to the fact that the video lessons must be coordinated with the telephone lessons, and the fact that the telephone instructors are hired only to work the days posted on the published calendar, this syllabus presumes that all sites begin on the first instructional day of the published calendar. This includes schools watching tapes AND schools downloading the satellite feed. A Supplemental Activity Packet is provided on the German web page for schools to use if their school begins before the first day of class.
Date of lesson: This column indicates the dates of holidays on the school calendar. The remaining blocks have been intentionally left blank, so that facilitators may enter the date their site watches each video lesson. For a schedule that includes complete broadcast dates, please consult the Broadcast Schedule in the "Read Me First" section of this guide or check the web site under "Info." This will keep a daily record of the lessons viewed and provides a reminder of where to continue in case there is an interruption in a school's calendar.
Day: German II from KET provides 179 days of instruction for a full year course, and 86 days for the block course. This column numbers the instructional days from 1 through 179, or 1 through 86 for the block course.
Video lesson: The "FS" in this column abbreviates the German word "Fernsehstunde." It is the taped or broadcast video lesson that the students watch on a regular basis. At the beginning, after the Winter Break, and at the end of the school year, a video lesson is assigned to every instructional day. However, once telephone lessons begin, students will watch a video lesson 3 days a week and participate in a telephone lesson the other two days of the week. The KET Tutor Coordinator will assign the days for the telephone lessons after a master schedule has been created. Usually, schools that watch a video lesson on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday are assigned a Wednesday-Friday telephone time. Schools that watch a video lesson on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are assigned a Tuesday-Thursday telephone time. A running time is printed for each video lesson. These running times apply only to schools that purchased videotapes of the course. Times may vary a little for schools that download the satellite feed on a daily basis.
In the block course, students receive 3 telephone lessons per week.
Schüler bei der Arbeit: Approximately once a month, there will be a scheduled work day that does not include a broadcast. More information will be given about these classes on the web site.
Content: The information in this column provides the German title of the video lesson ("Fernsehstunde") and gives a brief description of the content of the lesson.
Optional: In the content column, some lessons are designated as "optional." This indicates that the students will not be tested on this information. The material covered in these lessons is still important to the course as a whole; however, if a school's schedule demands that a lesson be skipped, these lessons can be covered at another time during the school year.
Graded item: An "X" in this column indicates that during the lesson for that day a graded assignment was given. These graded assignments include quizzes, tests, compositions, and projects. Generally, the facilitator retrieves the key for quizzes, grades them, and enters scores into the electronic grade book. Compositions and projects are sent to KET for grading. With a few exceptions, tests are also sent to KET for grading. The "X" in the column is a reminder that the assignment needs to be graded or sent to KET for grading. PLEASE NOTE: In addition to these graded assignments, facilitators are required to give a "Class Participation Grade" about every 2 weeks for the full year course, or every week for the block course. Dates and assignment summaries for these grades will be posted on the web.
Date item entered/sent: As facilitators grade and enter the scores for the assignments graded at the site into the electronic grade book, they are asked to record the date in this column. For assignments sent to KET, they are asked to record the date the item was mailed. This will help in keeping track of when assignments are completed and graded. It is a good idea to copy student work before mailing to KET. Although it rarely occurs, materials may get lost in the mail.
Telephone lessons: The lessons numbered in this column indicate when a telephone lesson is conducted. After the first 10 video lessons, the telephone lesson is coupled with a numbered video lesson. This corresponds to the days that schools are assigned to take a telephone lesson or watch a video. The "FS+number" shows which video lessons the telephone lesson covers.
Comments: Further details are provided about materials and lessons in this column. Facilitators are encouraged also to use this column to enter notes, changes in schedule, etc. and other important information concerning the course at their site.
