AP® Physics B and
Honors Physics 2008-2009

KET DL Home

Course Objective

AP® Physics is a one-year high school course for students with career plans in science, math, engineering, medicine, and similar fields. Using college textbooks, syllabi, homework, and tests, this course provides students with a rigorous preparation for the AP® Physics B test and the Medical College Aptitude Test.

The course provides full instruction on all topics on a set of 27 CD-ROMs (14 for Honors), or 4 DVDs (2 for Honors). Nearly every phenomenon studied is illustrated by animation and/or video. In all cases, the student has complete control of the flow of the instruction. The student can take a second look at a difficult passage in the lecture and fast-forward past another. All the tools used in the lessons are available for use during review or while doing homework. Lectures and demonstrations are integrated with lessons in problem solving.

Students work independently, with minimal need for supervision at their school. The teacher is available via e-mail and phone when help is needed. Tests are graded by the teacher. Homework is graded by computer. Students may re-try missed homework until they are successful.

For 2008-09, the course has a virtual lab component that meets the new College Board AP requirements. It is recommended, but not required, that students take this course as a follow-up to a general high school physics course with a lab component. It should be stressed that this course will follow the College Board's guidelines for AP® Physics B. As such, it is equivalent to a yearlong sophomore-level college course. This course is for highly motivated students who are ready for a challenge.

AP® Physics B is not available on a block schedule.

Honors Physics is for students who want to learn physics at a high level, but who are not interested in the full AP® Physics B program. It is a one-year (recommended) or one-semester block course. Honors Physics uses the same college textbook as the AP course, but features a shortened syllabus, as well as somewhat less demanding homework and tests.

Virtual Physics Labs is currently a part of our AP® Physics B course. Beginning in the fall of 2008 it will be available to all schools for use in any course. The labs are ideal for filling in holes in your lab program, but can also be used in pre-lab activities, homework and for lecture/demonstration.

The prerequisites for AP® Physics B and Honors Physics are Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry. A previous Physics course is recommended.

Chuck earned his MS in nuclear engineering from the University of Kentucky, and his BS in physics from Morehead State University. Chuck is also one of twenty national recipients of the Christa McAuliffe Fellowship, awarded by the U. S. Department of Education through the National Education Association, for improvement in education. In addition to his regular satellite physics course, Chuck has produced many hours of televised professional development seminars for high school, middle school and elementary school teachers. As a part-time instructor at the University of Kentucky, he works with pre-service elementary and middle school teachers to prepare them for the physics component of their future teaching careers.
Work Experience: Fayette County Public Schools (Lexington) 1976-Present; University of Kentucky 1973-present; Institute for Mining and Minerals Research, 1974-1975; Environmental Protection Agency, 1974; Morehead State University, 1972-73; Boy Scouts of America and other camping organizations, 1966-1973.

Producing Organization The Kentucky Educational Television Network and
Kentucky Department of Education
Student Prerequisites Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry. A previous Physics course is recommended for AP students.
Special Equipment Each student must have access to a Windows based Internet connected computer for the CD-ROM sessions. (See: KET Computer Equipment Requirement Chart.) These computers could be at any convenient location in the school. Each classroom will also require a telephone.
Lesson Delivery The video, as well as the interactive lessons are available on CD-ROMs ($50/student) or DVDs ($20/student).

A syllabus is posted on the AP® Physics B or Honors Physics web site. Due to varying schedules between schools, each school will be on its own schedule. But students must hold to this schedule in order to complete the course in time for the AP exam in May.
Class Size AP® Physics B and Honors Physics are more of an independent study courses. Students need not work together nor at exactly the same pace. However, testing should be done at the same time for all students in a school to avoid cheating and to keep students on schedule.
Course Guides The following materials will be delivered automatically, based on your enrollment:
Student Materials $10/student for AP® Physics B
no charge for Honors Physics
Kentucky AP® Physics B Students $50/School Lab Fee
non-Kentucky AP® Physics B Students $50/School plus $10/student Lab Fee
